On Saturday the sun bathed South Galway for the unveiling of the new Yeats Exhibition in Thoor Ballylee which is now open to the public every day over the summer.

Thoor Ballylee, WB Yeats’s one time home near Gort, will officially re-open to the public on Saturday June 18. The opening will include an exhibition, the first of a number of events planned for the summer.

It started with a simple post on Facebook from Philadelphia based musician, Gabriel Donohue. Gabriel is a native of Kilconieron and also a renowned musician and producer who recently performed with Tom Waits on the Jay Leno show in the US.

The Burren Lowlands Group was among the winners at this year’s Golden Mile of Galway Awards, receiving the Built Heritage Award for a mile extending from Ballylee Cross to the Ballyaneen lios/fort. This is one of the most historic roads in the county as it includes Thoor Ballylee, an old mill and miller’s house, Yeats’ cottage, ring forts, a blessed well, and 19th century farmhouses.

Following the recent flooding of Yeat’s tower and cottage at Thoor Ballylee, a number of Galway musicians are to perform a fundraising concert in The Village Theatre, Carrabane this weekend.
